Omari Hardwick, who started the ‘Power’ universe with his iconic character James ‘Ghost’ St., recently reflected on the lasting legacy of his iconic character, James ‘Ghost’ St. Patrick. Hardwick’s performance of the complex nightclub owner-turned-drug lord became a household name. In a recent ‘Fat Joe Talks’ interview, the actor explained how his life experiences impacted his approach to the role.

Fat Joe asked an interesting question during the chat: How was Hardwick, whose real-life personality is gentle and reflective, able to bring the ruthless Ghost to life flawlessly? Hardwick acknowledged that despite the differences between himself and his character, they are not as distinct as some might believe. He admitted that positively influences and life opportunities kept him on a different path than the one Ghost ultimately chose.

“The actor is never that far from who they are,” Hardwick told Fat Joe. “So if I’m not literally murdering, I have the propensity to have become that, less a few good opportunities in life, less a father being in my life to care about me.”

Hardwick explained that the distinction between artist and gangster is often blurrier than one might think. Joe observed that it’s intriguing that someone with Hardwick’s poetic nature can portray a ‘gangster’ character with authenticity. Hardwick responded by stating that many gangsters, like poets, possess an innate sensitivity and a desire to see those around them succeed.

“You sold millions, billions of records as a poet,” Hardwick said.

He praised Joe’s artistry while mentioning his connection with Power executive producer and co-star Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson.

“Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson is a poet. By the way, on Season 1, he sent me to his publishing company. The gangsters will pull you up. What gangster doesn’t put folks up on game?”

Hardwick’s raw intensity to Ghost was based on understanding human nature, particularly the complex duality in both artists and criminals, as reflected in his comments. This level of depth made the original ‘Power’ series resonate with audiences on such a massive scale. Throughout six seasons, ‘Power’ became a cultural phenomenon, resulting in multiple spin-offs such as ‘Power Book II: Ghost, ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan, and ‘Power Book IV: Force.’

With the recent completion of ‘Power Book II: Ghost,’ Hardwick’s reflection on his time as Ghost speaks to the long-lasting impact the character has had on fans and pop culture. Hardwick is still proud of the legacy he has left behind even though his time as Ghost is over.  Despite his Ghost days ending, Hardwick remains proud of the legacy he has left behind.
