Mary J. Blige is saying goodbye to her beloved Power Book II: Ghost character, Monet Tejada, after his shocking death in the final episode of the series. The ‘Family Affair’ singer portrayed the powerful matriarch of the Tejada family for four seasons, leaving an indelible mark on the Power universe.

Blige, 53, shared an emotional statement to PEOPLE about her experience playing Monet, linking her character of the real-life women she admired growing up.

“It’s been a dream to join the Power family and play a character like Monet Tejada. This character allowed me to show a woman on screen that I know well,” Blige shared. “From the start, Monet reminded me of my mom and so many other mothers who had to be strong raising children in the inner cities.”

Blige’s character, played by Woody McClain, Lovell Adams-Gray, and LaToya Tonodeo, was a mother who navigated the violent world of drug dealing while trying to protect her children at all costs. Monet’s arc came to a crushing conclusion in this final season, filled with intense drama and tension, as she sacrificed herself to save her children.

“This final season has been amazing to watch with the fans, and I can’t thank them enough for being along for this ride,” Blige expressed, showing gratitude to the show’s loyal audience.

Monet’s co-stars also felt the impact death scene. The character of Tariq St. Patrick, is portrayed by Michael Rainey Jr., shared his emotional reaction with PEOPLE. “I actually shed a tear when I watched [Monet die],” the 24-year-old actor revealed. “I knew it was happening and everything, but I actually shed a tear. That scene…we really got rid of Monet? That’s crazy.”

Rainey Jr. Pondered over Monet’s final moments, astonished by the character’s bravery.  “She came out with the two guns, she don’t care, she threw her life away right there, like y’all not gonna kill my babies. Like, y’all can take me, but y’all not gonna take my babies,” he said. “She’s a gangster. She went out like a G, I can’t lie. But I definitely shed a few tears.”

Blige’s performance of Monet Tejada in Power Book II: Ghost will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the series’ most outstanding performances, indicating the end of an era for those who love the Power universe.
