Captain Louis Baptiste clarifies to Detective Garcia in Power Book III: Raising Kanan, Season 4, Episode 2, that the case surrounding Detective Malcolm Howard’s murder has not yet been resolved, regardless of the official narrative.
Despite the NYPD Commissioner publicly declaring the investigation closed and blaming foreign nationals, Baptiste realizes that the truth is complex and is not ready to let it go. Baptiste lays it all out in a tense conversation.
“The task force has been disbanded. But this case? It’s not closed, not by a long shot.”
Although the Bureau may not see a path to organized crime, Baptiste is not going to let Howard’s murder, even if it was a dirty cop, go unsolved. He finds this personal. He wants closure, with only six months left before he is forced to retire. Garcia is alone, without a task force or official backing, and only pursues the truth quietly but relentlessly.
.”“Press up your informants. Lean on your locals. Squeeze hard on anyone you can. Whoever put Howard down is still out there,”Baptiste orders, determined to ensure justice is served. He’s convinced that the same shooter who targeted Howard before is responsible, and it’s only a matter of time before the proper pressure cracks the case open. Garcia’s marching orders make it clear that the hunt for Howard’s killer is still alive. With the investigation now closed, secrecy is key. However, in Raising Kanan, the truth never stays hidden for long.
