Ne-Yo Actually Wrote ‘Irreplaceable’ For Himself Not Beyoncé

It has been 14 years since Beyoncé released her smash hit ‘Irreplaceable’ as a part of her B’Day album. The single was written by Ne-Yo, Mikkel S. Eriksen, Tor Erik Hermansen, Espen Lind, Amund Bjorklund, and Beyoncé Knowles, the song would be nominated for a Grammy in 2008.
In 2007, Irreplaceable was the most successful song of 2007 in the United States. It went on to be the tenth most sold digital single in 2007 with over 4.6 million copies sold worldwide.
On Sunday night NeYo joined Club House and in his Welcome chatroom, he was asked a variety of different questions, including how was writing for Beyoncé. When he pinned Irreplacable.
“So, crazy part of it is, I didn’t write Irreplaceable for Beyoncé initially. Like we weren’t in the studio and put a song together. I wrote a song… But, that is not how it happened. It was me writing a song with the intention of me singing it myself, and it was a situation that happened with an auntie of mine,” said Ne-Yo.
“I remember in memory, and I wrote the song. We realized it was going to work better on a female. We shopped it around to a few female artists that actually turned it down. Then it found it Beyoncé became the song, it was going to become. That was how it happened and I learned a few lessons behind that song.”
Turns out Ne-Yo made the right decision to shop it around because it would become a masterpiece on the B’Day album.
