Cedric The Entertainer Reveals How Original Kings of Comedy Was Formed
It has almost been 22 years since the ‘Original Kings of Comedy’ documentary was filmed and directed by Spike Lee. Steve Harvey’s comedies, D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer, and Bernie Mac.
Filmed live at the Charlotte Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina, the actors offer their views on African-American culture, race relations, religion, and family.
On Wednesday night, Cedric the Entertainer was on the Clubhouse app in the Behind The Vest with Druski room.
During the chat, Cedric was asked what the process for them to get together for Original Kings of Comedy was.
“That was a product of timing and of course, me and Steve [Harvey] were on the Steve Harvey show. So, we were together all the time and this guy who was promoting, he would do us all individually. At that time, nobody thought about doing a big arena-style show. So, comedy was really in the space because Def Comedy Jam was hot, and doing theatre shows was the idea. So, he would [promote] us individually,” said Cedric the Entertainer.
“He would do me and D.L. [Hughley], he would do Steve by himself, and he would do Bernie [Mac] by himself. Then I guessed he had this idea to have this big show and he presented to us. Like, yo, I want to take everybody out and I want to do it arenas. Likely we were all cool and we were able to work it out then we added D.L. [Hughley]. The first year, it was me, Bernie [Mac], Steve, and Guy Tory who was our MC and opening act. Then the next year we added D.L. Hughley and Steve went to the MC spot.”
Speaking of Cedric the Entertainer last month, he issued a warning to Dave Chappelle that he might cancel himself.
“Once you feel you’re ‘uncancelable,’ or if you think that’s what you’re fighting for, that’s the wrong approach to take… to saying something that you really want to say,” Cedric said during his interview on the “The Domenick Nati” show.
Cedric refers to Chappelle doubling what he said after the controversial comedy “The Closer” when Chappelle said incendiary things about the LBGTQ+ community. Chappelle told the audience that he cannot be canceled.
