Omari Hardwick, who is a renowned actor and performer in Power, joined Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes on the All The Smoke podcast to talk about a wide range of subjects, including Jackson’s potential to become an actor. Hardwick gave a passionate and thought-provoking analysis, comparing Jackson’s unique blend of intensity and authenticity to the qualities necessary for a successful acting career.
Hardwick praised Jackson without hesitation, saying that he embodies the complexity required for acting. “You need joy and pain,” Hardwick emphasized. “And you need an ability to forgive everything by the time they say ‘roll camera, action.”
He compared a candid moment Jackson shared with his wife before the cameras began rolling, which draws a comparison to the raw emotion that fuels memorable performances.
“You have the intensity, the joy with the pain,” Hardwick said. “Whether it’s comedy, drama, or horror, you can sit in it. Less is always more.”
Drawing Parallels to Allen Iverson and Ja Morant
Hardwick pondered on cultural changes in both the NBA and society during the discussion. He pointed out how athletes such as Ja Morant have to deal with challenges such as social media and constant scrutiny, which players of past generations, such as Allen Iverson, did not face in the same way. Hardwick characterized Iverson as “Tupac Amaru for our NBA,” and recognized Jackson’s role in that tradition as someone who remains authentic without any compromise.
Acting as an Outlet for Authenticity
According to Hardwick, Jackson’s natural personality traits, such as intensity, vulnerability, and emotional depth, are in line with what makes for great actors. Jackson’s dynamic with Matt Barnes was praised by him, as he called them “two of the coolest duos” in the realm of podcasting and suggesting that Barnes could take a similar path if he chose to.
“You operate at a place where you are super secure and emotionally together when the camera starts rolling,” Hardwick said. “Afterwards, when they say cut, you might be a nut bag, but in the moment, you have the gift.”
The Bigger Picture: Beyond Basketball
The theme of athletes finding success and fulfillment beyond their sports careers was brought to life by Hardwick’s comments. Jackson’s charisma and Hardwick’s endorsement make it plausible and promising for Stack to enter the acting world. Hardwick saw in Jackson not only a retired NBA champion but also a storyteller who is ready to shine on a different stage, as the conversation wrapped up.
