Seattle and Las Vegas are in limbo after the NBA‘s Board of Governors postponed discussions of league expansion to another meeting. Adam Silver, the NBA Commissioner, reiterated that expansion is still a long-term objective, but no plans exist to add teams.

The Board of Governors held their most recent meeting at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City. Fans eagerly awaiting the return of the Seattle SuperSonics, a franchise relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008, are disappointed by the statement. Even though there is increasing speculation and interest from investors, the NBA remains incommutable about its expansion plans.

Seattle’s Case for NBA Expansion Remains Strong

Seattle is still one of the most viable markets for an NBA team. The city is known for its extensive basketball history, passionate fans, and a state-of-the-art arena named Climate Pledge Arena, currently home to the NHL’s Seattle Kraken. The NBA has consistently acknowledged Seattle’s market strength, and Silver has confirmed that the league is well-informed about the city’s enthusiasm.

“I would just say again to our many fans in Seattle — and I hear from them often, the legacy of the Sonics is still very strong and it’s a fantastic basketball market — is that we are very focused on it. I think the fact that I’m sort of not being more forthcoming publicly doesn’t mean we’re not studying it very intensively,” Silver said. “We don’t take those fans for granted. We’re thankful that the interest has remained over all these years. And so I would just say the fact that we’re not ready to make any public announcements with a specific timeline doesn’t mean we don’t care a lot about those fans and are very focused on the potential for the NBA to return to Seattle.”

Despite acknowledging these things, the lack of a specific timeline has dissatisfied fans. Many people were optimistic that the recent sale of the Boston Celtics for $6.1 billion would eliminate one of the final financial obstacles to expanding the discussions. The league focuses on analyzing that transaction before focusing on potential new teams.

European Expansion Gains Momentum

Despite stalled domestic expansion talks, the NBA explores creating a European league under its brand. The concept is still being worked on, but it envisions a 16-team structure with a mix of permanent clubs and rotating spots determined by a promotion-relegation system similar to European soccer leagues. FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis expressed enthusiasm about this prospect.

“This is very important that we are having these conversations for our fans, for the development and growth of our sport,” FIBA secretary general Andreas Zagklis said.

The NBA’s increasing international influence, bolstered by five of the last six MVPs being international players, including Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic, aligns with this strategy. This global push does not offer much comfort to fans hoping for expansion within the United States, specifically Seattle.

Timeline for NBA Expansion: When Could It Happen?

If the Board of Governors holds more meetings at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, the expansion movement could begin as early as this summer. If a decision is not made by then, the next logical time frame would be the fall, which would likely lead to expansion discussions being pushed into September.

Adding new teams involves an extensive process that includes evaluating financial feasibility, securing ownership groups, and structuring revenue sharing.

It’s becoming increasingly evident that new franchises will not debut until at least the 2028-29 season at the earliest.

Seattle’s Future: A City Ready for NBA Basketball

Despite the ongoing delays, Seattle’s status as one of the most likely candidates for an NBA team remains unchanged. The city’s infrastructure, economic strength, and loyal fan base make it a perfect selection. Seattle’s return to the league appears inevitable even though Commissioner Silver hasn’t given any specific timeline. It’s only a matter of when not if.

Fans, investors, and city officials will still have to wait patiently, but the momentum for expansion increases with each passing year. Seattle will be at the forefront of the conversation when the NBA expands beyond 30 teams.
