A manhunt has been launched in New York City after Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred near the New York Hilton on Sixth Avenue just before 7 a.m., according to the NYPD.

Targeted Attack

At a midday press conference, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the shooting as a ‘brazen, targeted attack’, emphasizing that it does not appear to be a random act of violence.

Joseph Kenny, the NYPD Chief of Detectives, provided a detailed description of the suspect, using footage from security cameras. The attacker is described as a male with light skin who wears a light brown or cream-colored jacket, a black face mask, black and white sneakers, and carries a distinctive gray backpack. The suspect arrived on foot shortly before Thompson showed up outside the Hilton, where he was scheduled to attend an investor conference scheduled for 8 a.m., according to police. The suspect approached Thompson from behind, shot him in the back and leg, before fleeing northbound on foot. After boarding an electric CitiBike, the shooter was last seen heading towards Central Park.
“We will not rest until we identify and apprehend the shooter in this case,” Tisch said, reaffirming the NYPD’s commitment to solving the case.

A Distinguished Career

In April 2021, Thompson was appointed as the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. Fortune’s 2024 list of the world’s largest companies includes the eighth company, which is based in Minnesota and is a part of UnitedHealth Group. Thompson joined the company in 2004, specializing in mergers and acquisitions, before moving on to lead its government programs, including Medicare & Retirement and Community & State. Thompson was employed as a CPA at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP before he joined UnitedHealthcare. In 1997, he graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Accounting. Thompson’s residence was Maple Grove, Minnesota, where he lived with his wife, Paulette, and their two children.

Family and Community React

According to Paulette Thompson, her husband had previously mentioned receiving threats, but the details are still unclear.

“There had been some threats,” she said. “I don’t know details. I just know that he said there were some people that had been threatening him.”

Thompson’s sister-in-law, Elena Reveiz, expressed her grief to The New York Times, stating, “He was a good person, and I am so sad.”

On X (formerly Twitter), Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed his condolences and called the killing “horrifying news and a terrible loss for the business and healthcare community in Minnesota.” Senator Amy Klobuchar also expressed her sorrow, writing, “My thoughts are with Brian Thompson’s family and loved ones and all those working at UnitedHealthcare in Minnesota.”

Reward

If you provide information that leads to the suspect’s identification and arrest, you could earn up to $10,000 from the NYPD. As authorities intensify their search for the shooter, the healthcare and business communities mourn the loss of a respected leader who made significant contributions.
