Former Seahawks Coach Reveals Why Seattle is Reluctant to Sign Colin Kaepernick
It has been four seasons since Colin Kaepernick last played in the NFL as a member of the San Francisco 49ers. And it is all because the former quarterback elected to take a knee during the National Anthem in 2016 in protects of police brutality and social injustice towards the African American community.
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick told NFL Network’s Steve Wyche.
“To me, this is bigger than football, and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
Kaepernick’s protest would later lead to him being benched and his opting out of his contract with the 49ers. The Denver Broncos were reportedly interested in his services but want him to take a $4.9 million pay cut, which he declined. It was also reported that Baltimore Ravens were interested in bringing him in. Still, reportedly due to comments made by his girlfriend Nessa Diab compared Ravens’ legend Ray Lewis and owner Steve Bisciotti to characters from” Django Unchained”” played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson.
Earlier this year, I spoke about Kaepernick being a great fit in Seattle as a backup to Russell Wilson on The Mike and Donny Show on Fox Soul TV.
“I can see [Colin] Kaep [ernick] going to Seattle. I know Pete Carroll [and the Seahawks] brought him in; well, supposedly, they brought him in for a workout, or they are trying to attempt to bring him in for a workout. And I know Pete Carroll talked about him a couple of days ago, and they need a backup quarterback. So, they don’t have a veteran backup quarterback on the roster right now. So, I can possibly see him going to Seattle.”
Hall of Famer and former Seahawks quarterback Warren Moon also thinks Kaepernick is an excellent fit for Seattle.
“I think the Seahawks style of play fits what he likes to do”” he said,” and I think it would be a good fit””
Also, earlier this year, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll was a guest on the”Flying Coach”” podcast with Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr and San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich talked about Kaepernick still not having a job.
“I think that there was a moment in time that a young man captured. He took a stand on something — figuratively, he took a knee — but he stood up for something he believed in”” said Carroll.””And what an extraordinary moment it was that he was willing to take. I don’t know that he had any idea what the impact would be, as it turned out, but what a symbol of courage””
“We’re not protecting our people,” Carroll added.”We’re not looking after one another. We’re not making the right choices. We’re not following the right process to bring people to justice when actions are taken. So I think it was a big sacrifice in the sense that a young man makes, but those are the courageous moments that some guys take.
“And we owe a tremendous amount to him for sure.”
Dispute Pete Carroll sharing that they owe a tremendous amount to the former quarterback; he didn’t voice any desire to sign him.
Why is that? According to former Seahawks coach trainee turned radio host Nick Ferguson, Seattle has been reluctant to sign him due to their heavy military influence in the area.
“When you look at the Seattle area there is a large amount of former and current military that live in that area, and they have gone on record in saying they did not want Colin [Kaepernick] there. And if he were to come they would not support the team. So, that is the reason why Colinwouldn’tt be with the Seattle Seahawks. Not because you have Geno Smith. Anyone that knows football would tell you, if you are comparing Colin [Kaepernick] to Geno [Smith], which quarterback has been more successful It’s Colin, he’s been to a Super Bowl, right ? Geno hasn’t been there and I get tired of these false narratives about what these people say about Colin,” said Ferguson on the What’s Your Opinion Podcast.
Ferguson also shared that the Los Angeles Chargers should bring Kaepernick in to compete with their third-string quarterback Easton Stick.
“I hope he gets another shot, you mentioned Anthony Lynn with the Chargers that’s opportunity for him to be there. Easton Stick is the third team quarterback, but if are asking me, well if you have Tyrod Taylor, Justin Herbert, and Easton Stick. Well heck, I would bring in Colin Kaepernick to let him compete with Easton Stick and see where Justin Herbert is as your future quarterback.”
