Brian Gregory has been officially promoted to general manager of the Phoenix Suns, taking him from his position as vice president of player programming. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the move, which is a pivotal moment for a franchise already facing scrutiny due to a turbulent season and a succession of high-profile coaching changes.

“Brian has been a valuable member of our front office, playing an integral role in drafting and developing our young players,” said Suns owner Mat Ishbia in a press release. “I am excited for him to step into the role of general manager. He is a brilliant basketball mind, and he will transform and elevate our team.”

However, an NBA Source, who recently spoke with LandonBuford.com, isn’t buying it.

“Let’s be clear. Mat Ishbia — when it comes to basketball — is the worst NBA owner ever,” the league source stated bluntly. “This isn’t personal. This is strictly basketball. That’s the problem, though. This decision reeks of nepotism and has no business being made at this level of the game.”

Gregory’s Resume: College Roots, NBA Leap

Gregory, a college basketball veteran, has coached at Dayton, Georgia Tech, and South Florida, with a career record of 327-287 over nearly two decades. Although he had a lengthy tenure, Gregory only won one NCAA Tournament game with Dayton during the 2008–09 season; his teams often struggled to excel at the highest levels of college basketball. He joined the Suns’ front office in 2024, but he had no experience as an NBA executive or coach before that.

“What’s your explanation for hiring Brian Gregory?” the source continued. “He’s a loser. He made it to two NCAA games in nearly two decades, with a ton of losing seasons. How does that qualify him to be a general manager in the NBA?”

A Controversial Choice: Critics Cry Nepotism

Giving Gregory the keys to basketball operations sparked an immediate backlash from some corners of the NBA. Critics question the hire because of Gregory’s lack of NBA pedigree and modest college success, and they are wondering if his loyalty to Suns owner Mat Ishbia was the main factor.

“This decision reeks of nepotism and has no business being made at this level of the game,” one league source told LandonBuford.com, echoing a sentiment that has gained traction on social media and among Suns fans.

The connection between Ishbia and Gregory goes back to their time at Michigan State, where Ishbia was a walk-on player and Gregory was an assistant coach. Critics argue that Gregory’s relationship, not his basketball résumé, made the difference. Some fans have accused Ishbia of running the team as a personal ‘plaything’, prioritizing friends over proven basketball minds.

“You hired your former college coach. You weren’t even a real player — you were on the team because of your dad’s influence and money. That’s what this looks like. It’s ridiculous,” the source added. “I hope the Suns go 0–82 for the next 100 years. That’s how outrageous this is.”

Franchise in Flux: Turmoil at the Top

The Suns’ front office changes come after a disappointing season, where they missed the playoffs despite having stars like Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal. The team has gone through four head coaches in just four years, raising questions about its long-term vision and stability. Former general manager James Jones assembled the 2021 Finals roster and will serve as an adviser.

Mat Ishbia has publicly promised to transform the team’s culture and identity after an “embarrassing” season. Still, both national pundits and former players have criticized his hands-on approach. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith recently labeled Ishbia “one of the worst owners in NBA history” because the skepticism surrounding the franchise’s direction is amplified by comparisons made based on basketball decisions; he would later apologize to Ishbia.

Supporters: Gregory’s Player Development Skills

While the backlash has been intense, some within the Suns organization highlight Gregory’s reputation for building relationships and developing players. These qualities could prove valuable as the team retools its roster. According to NBA insiders, Gregory has already significantly impacted Phoenix’s draft strategy and is highly respected by Ishbia for his leadership and vision.

What’s Next for the Suns?

Gregory’s first tasks as GM will be critical: hiring a new head coach and navigating potential blockbuster movies, including the future of Kevin Durant. The franchise is under pressure to deliver results quickly and is not willing to tolerate further missteps.

It’s unclear whether Gregory’s unconventional promotion is a sign of a bold new era or a miscalculation rooted in loyalty. The Suns’ gamble has led to a high-stakes off-season, and the NBA world is closely watching.
