Racism Is As American As Baseball In This Country, Says Former UFC Fighter Bobby Maximus
Earlier this week, former Minneapolis police officer Kim Porter was charged with second-degree manslaughter for killing 20-year-old Daunte Wright. The charge was filed just three days after Wright was killed during a traffic stop. The incident occurred not far from where former Officer Derek Chauvin’s murder trial is taken place. Chauvin is on trial for the murder of George Floyd.
“Certain occupations carry an immense responsibility and none more so than a sworn police officer,” Imran Ali, Washington County assistant criminal division chief, said in a statement announcing the charge against Potter. “(Potter’s) action caused the unlawful killing of Mr. Wright, and she must be held accountable.”
On Friday afternoon, former UFC fighter and police officer Bobby Maximus was on Instagram Live with Ryan Hollins were talking about a variety of topics, including police brutality and social justice.
“I’m passionate about this stuff and very to talk about it and can be honest. The first thing I want to say is I have a unique perspective because I’m Canadian. We don’t have the level of racism in Canada that you have in the United States. I have lived in the United States for eleven years now, and I’m about to say something that’s about to trigger many people. Racism is as American as baseball,” said Maximus.
“You guys f***ing love it. It’s just part of your deal. I always use the example, and you learned this in school; where did the underground railroad go? North! What is North of the United States? Canada! So, when you guys were celebrating slavery, we weren’t about it. It is not part of our history, and it is so intertwined in the culture here.”
