Kat Orlando, a Detroit-based artist, shows how even social obligations of necessity provide a fertile soil for inspiring music with her new release, “Mean Daughter’s Wedding.” The track, taken from the 2025 EP Black Tie, is itself a soulful funk gem that finds humor in a situation almost every listener will know all too well, turning up to a wedding you wish hadn’t been so lovely.
Far from the bitterness suggested by the title, Orlando approaches her theme withwit and warmth. The song captures the awkwardness and inner commentary of being a reluctant guest at his friend’s daughter’s wedding, elevating mild impatience into twisted storytelling. It’s observational, relatable, and biased, with a knowing smile, music that feels more like a hushed laugh passed down the banquet table.
“Mean Daughter’s Wedding” lives up to its title in the rhythm department. As Orlando’s signature saxophone steps to the front of the track, it does so with an assured presence that adds a little personality to each phrase. Her sax isn’t merely ornamental to the song but a voice, a jester, and an elbow in the listener’s side. Laying down funky, tight guitar rhythms to complement that energy is James Owens, whose playing gives the track a real sense of groundedness, even when it’s dancing.
Combined, the instruments lend the song a relaxed, rhythmic bounce that perfectly suits its tongue-in-cheek tale. “Mean Daughter’s Wedding” is a reminder that great songs don’t demand grand drama. Creativity doesn’t have to be complicated, though, all it requires sometimes is a cutting perspective and an artist with enough confidence to make everyday reluctance impossible to resist.
