God Shammgod Says His Own Doc On The Way, Praises Kevin Durant & Rich Kleiman For ‘NYC Point Gods’ And Revealed They Tried To Get Sebastian Telfair
Earlier this year, Dallas Mavericks assistant coach God Shammgod was featured in ‘NYC Point Gods’ on Showtime which was produced by 35 Ventures. The documentary highlights the players = and style of play who emerged from New York in the 1980s, who came to inspire a style of play that has made its way to the NBA and East Coast hip-hop.
Players on display include New York legends Rafer Alston, Kenny Anderson, Mark Jackson, Stephon Marbury, God Shammgod, Kenny Smith, Rod Strickland and Dwayne “Pearl” Washington.
In a recent conversation with Shammgod, he said that there’s a lot more story that can be talked about.
“Yeah, it’s a lot more that we can do, and a lot more people are going to do. Right now, I’m shooting one on my life, so that’s good, but New York City has a rich culture. Many players we impacted a culture across the globe and the world. So, it was just good to see. The documentary was excellent; shoutouts to Kevin Durant and Rich Kleiman because it was well done. I thought it would be good, but it was better than what it would be. To see all that stuff because it is weird watching. I’m like, I have direct connections to everybody in the documentary,” said Shammgod.
“Steph and I grew up together. We were high players of the year together, and we both looked up to Kenny Anderson, Kenny Smith’s brother, and coach. Kevin Jackson coached me growing up, and Mark Jackson is my cousin. And Rafer and I grew up together as well. So, I’m the common dementor with everybody on there. I grew up in a prosperous era; simultaneously, New York City is so big but so small. Suppose you were good at something other people were at, whether it was rappers, basketball players, or big-time drug dealers growing up. You all hung in the same circle, and that’s how New York City is.”
Are there any other individuals that should of been in the doc that wasn’t?
“It could have been a lot of people, but the first one who comes to my mind is Sebastian Telfair. They tried to get him, but he wasn’t around; the other was my mentor. He was on my part. Tiny Archibald, but they didn’t get to speak with him in person. I would stay those two, but to be on the doc period, because Tiny was on my par, and Sebastian Telfair. Then you got who people don’t really know Shaheen Holloway people know him as a coach now, but at the time he was the number one point guard country and he got MVP of the McDonald’s All-American over Kobe, and Ed Cota is another one.”
God Shammgod is in his sixth season as part of the Dallas Mavericks coaching staff.
