Dallas Mavericks Waive Three Players

The Dallas Mavericks made an important announcement today, signaling a step closer to finalizing their roster for the upcoming 2023-24 NBA season. The team has decided to waive three young and promising players: guard Mike Miles Jr., guard Jordan Walker, and guard/forward Joe Wieskamp. This decision comes as part of the team’s efforts to make their final roster decisions before the regular season begins on October 18.

Mike Miles Jr., who had previously been signed to a Two-Way contract on July 14, 2023, did not have the chance to showcase his talents in any of Dallas’ first three preseason games. On the other hand, both Jordan Walker and Joe Wieskamp joined the Mavericks as free agents on August 14, 2023, and were able to get some playing time in all three of Dallas’ preseason contests.

Jordan Walker, in particular, made a noteworthy impact during the preseason. He averaged 5.7 points and 1.7 assists in just over 8 minutes of playing time per game, demonstrating his potential as a valuable asset. While Joe Wieskamp contributed three points in the first preseason game against Minnesota on October 5, his playing time was limited to an average of 3.8 minutes per game.

The Mavericks’ decision to waive these players reduces their roster to 16 players, including 15 with guaranteed contracts. With NBA rules stipulating that teams must have a maximum of 15 players on their roster by the start of the regular season, the Mavericks are now faced with the challenge of making one final cut before the action begins in earnest.

This move reflects the Mavericks’ ongoing efforts to rebuild and reposition themselves in the competitive Western Conference. The team had a disappointing 2022-23 season, finishing with a record of 32-50 and missing the playoffs for the second time in three years. The upcoming season holds renewed hope for the franchise, with a revamped roster featuring star players like Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, Spencer Dinwiddie, and Christian Wood.

As for the players who have been waived, Mike Miles Jr., Jordan Walker, and Joe Wieskamp, they are all young, talented individuals who will undoubtedly seek new opportunities to continue their careers in the NBA. While their time with the Mavericks may have been brief, it’s common for young talents to move around the league and find the right fit as they work to establish themselves in the highly competitive world of professional basketball.

This decision by the Dallas Mavericks is a testament to the team’s commitment to building a roster that they believe can lead them back to playoff contention. As the regular season approaches, fans eagerly anticipate the new-look Mavericks, hoping for a resurgence that will bring them back to the excitement and competitiveness that has defined the franchise’s history.
