Is Shaun Alexander a Hall of Famer? Depends on the Voters Says Walter Jones

Walter Jones is arguably one of the greatest offensive linemen of all time. During his 12-year career in a Seattle Seahawks uniform, he started in 180 games at the left tackle position. Throughout his Hall of Fame career only allowed 23 sacks. Meaning in the 12 seasons that he was in the league his counterpart reached the quarterback fewer than 2 times each season.

Jones was also a member of the All-Pro Team six-times and named to the 2000s All-Decade team. In 2005, the Seattle Seahawks would reach Superbowl XL after posting a 13 -3 record. Securing home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, which capped off an MVP season for Shaun Alexander. The Seahawks would end up losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-10. Some would say there were a lot of questionable calls in that game at Ford Field back in February of 2006.

Walter Jones was a major reason why Seattle’s run game along with future Hall of Famer Steve Hutchinson was so lethal. They were able to open large running lanes for Shaun Alexander to operate allowing him to obtain the MVP Award. Shaun Alexander finished his career with 9,453 total Rushing Yards and 100 touchdowns, but the million-dollar question is does that make him a Hall of Famer?

I recently spoke with Alexander’s former teammate Hall of Famer Walter Jones and ask him that same question:

“Running backs are tough because of numbers it all depends on the voters. It is a popularity thing as well nowadays, and I think from a media standpoint Shaun was a great guy.” Jones told me.

If the voters are focusing on career touchdowns alone Alexander is seventh all-time and the other six individuals ahead of him are all members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Now, if it comes down to total rushing yards that might get a little tricky because he is ranked 36th all-time. If you ask me I would say he should be voted in eventually just like former MVP Terrell Davis, who was just inducted, but being a member of two Superbowl winning teams in 1998 and 1999 with the Denver Broncos might have swayed the voters.  Like Jones said.
