Tate McClain’s new song, “Can’t Break Me,” begins with a pressurized sense of calm certainty, as if you’re waiting for life to mess with you. From the first notes, you can almost picture someone screaming to the heavens after it all falls apart.
The first drop comes at 0:19, and it establishes the tone straightaway. This isn’t a song about giving in, it’s about fighting back. McClain delivers a punchy, emotional sound, an unusual comparison that in the end makes it feel more like a battle cry than just a sad reflection. And when the chorus arrives at 0:42, momentum shifts once again, as were delivered a melody that’s as catchy as it is determinedly applied.
But what truly separates “Can’t Break Me” from the battle is the way it builds. Then, from the 1:13 mark on, McClain ups the track, layering in call-and-response sections and a choir with intentional melody. “Can’t Break Me” is an inspirational journey that builds to its performance and success. Tate McClain’s “Can’t Break Me” is a track that doesn’t sound like anything else out there, and that originality is what gives it strength.
