Highroad No. 28 is embarking on a new chapter of creativity with the release of “Ache,” the first single from their third record, “The Will to Endure.” This Melbourne-based band uses a darker, moodier color palette that makes the work feel contemporary and authentic. The single, “Ache,” was recorded at Sing Sing Studios, mixed by James Taplin, and represents the band unlocking their heaviness for this new artistic phase.
“Ache” is a slow-burner, and it shimmers brightly with intricate melodies and colourful arrangements. This is fundamentally about the need for authenticity in expressing emotions, particularly heartache and diminishing desire. However, instead of wallowing in despair, the song focuses on the contrast between the ugliness and the beauty that come with feeling something so deeply. It’s an honest admission, enveloped in captivating auditory nuances, and evidence that Highroad No. 28 embraces discomfort with elegance and finery.
“Ache,” distributed via The Orchard (Sony Music), is a mission statement. As a band, they are better at clearly defining who they are with more vivid colors and complex sounds, while still maintaining the melodies that make them. This track suggests that “The Will to Endure” album will be a musical and emotional gut punch. This is both a logical and exciting evolution for the band.
