Licity Collins’s “Dragon” is a jubilee, an electrifying, rhythm-obsessed instrumental in the key of creativity, patience, and artistic joy unfettered. And it’s music that feels constructed from the ground up, based around groove, melody, and collaboration.
“Dragon” announces its lively energy from the get-go, and Collins also provides the rhythmic anchor, one that allows Meghan Coil’s violin to thrive and soar like a fiery beast made of light. The balance between strings and percussion is hypnotic and pulsing with tension and release. They constitute, together, a musical dialogue as spontaneous as it is exact.
Nicole Buetti’s bassoon and recorder only serve to add even more texture, making it lush, arresting, and profoundly human. The muted horn section sound of these instruments adds warmth and wonder, with Traverse Such’s electric guitar solo serving as the final spark, a touch of brilliance that completes the change.
“Dragon” is also about chemistry, crossing genre boundaries with such ease that jazz, funk, and folky textures all find a home in a seamless mix. Licity Collins reminds us that creativity is a practice of courage. On “Dragon,” she demonstrates that instrumental music can tell stories just as effectively as lyrics can. This track is fluent in motion, rhythm, and heart. It’s a flight of imagination, a fireball of sound that roars up those speakers and leaves you not only inspired, but transformed.
