Nicole Kidman seems to be everywhere these days, if you hadn’t already noticed. The Australian-American actor, who is 57 years old, is well-known for her versatility and unwavering dedication.
She has established herself as one of the most prolific stars in Hollywood, balancing a busy film and television schedule with a profound dedication to empowering the industry she loves.
Kidman’s high-profile releases include Netflix’s The Perfect Couple, Prime Video’s Expats, and Taylor Sheridan’s intense drama Lioness. A Family Affair and Babygirl, her latest projects, have both received praise from critics and audiences. Halina Reijn, a Dutch actor and director, have directed Babygirl and won the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival, making it a strong contender for the Oscars. The frequency and intensity of Kidman’s projects have raised questions, with some wondering why a star of her caliber would take on so much.
Kidman revealed to Variety that she has considered stepping back at times, but her commitment to the industry keeps her going forward.
“There are so many opportunities in terms of being able to be of service to people who are coming up,” she explained.
Her desire is to use her platform to aid others, particularly female filmmakers and creatives who are navigating a challenging industry. Kidman pointed out the importance of creating opportunities when talking about her work with Reijn on Babygirl.
“It’s very hard for me to go, ‘Okay, I’m just going to take care of myself,’ because I’m so much about taking care of other people. I’m thinking, ‘I can create more work for people. I can create jobs for people.’ And also, I love it. I have the passion.”
The passion Kidman has for fostering change in Hollywood is not new. Her commitment to supporting female directors to help bridge gender gaps in the industry was shared in 2017.
“Pretty much every 18 months, I’m making a movie with a female director because that’s the only way the statistics are going to change,” she said in an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.
Kidman’s dedication to building a more inclusive Hollywood, where a new generation of female voices can flourish, has been demonstrated by her consistent choice to work with women behind the camera.
In spite of the physical demands of her roles and the expectations that come with her star status,
Kidman’s tireless work ethic stems from a genuine love for the craft and a sense of responsibility to the industry that has shaped her career. Kidman’s influence is on the rise, transforming Hollywood not only through her on-screen performances but also through the opportunities she provides to others. Despite the likelihood that many in her position would choose to slow down.
As Kidman’s projects line up at film festivals and streaming platforms, her dedication to championing diverse voices and creating opportunities behind the scenes is becoming as celebrated as her acting. Kidman proves once again that she’s not just a Hollywood icon, but also a powerful advocate for change as Babygirl sets to make waves this awards season, increasing the value of her presence in the industry.
