The Hall Will Be Waiting When Diana Taurasi & Sue Bird ‘Are Ready To Step In,’ Says Nancy Lieberman
Earlier this month, Team USA Women’s Basketball captured their seventh straight gold medal and its 55th consecutive win at the Toyko Olympics after beating the host country 90-75. It also marked the 5th straight gold medal for basketball legends Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird.
“I mean what can you say it 20 years of sacrifice & putting everything side & just wanting to win,” says Taurasi.
“This one it is 7 in a row, but it’s not just about us. It’s about all the players that set the stage or on it right now,” said Bird.
Sue Bird has already announced that this will be the last go-around with Team USA Basketball.
“Couldn’t have hoped for a better ending. There’s not much to say I’m proud that I have been able to wear this uniform as long as I have & to play alongside Diana Taurasi. We have won, but there’s no I would have done it with,” Bird shared.
Meanwhile, Taurasi has left the door open for a possible appearance in Paris in three years.
If Taurasi is serious about competing in Paris in it will all depend on her health, she did not plan as many minutes this go around because of long-standing injuries, but when she did get a chance to play, she proved that she is still one of the best players in the world.
Fellow Olympian and Basketball Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman recently shared during the Big 3’s appearance in Dallas earlier this month that the Hall of Fame will be waiting for both Sue and Diana whenever they decided to hang up their sneakers.
“You are talking about two of the most legendary players in the game with Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi. The fact that their careers just about mirrored each other even though Sue is about a year or two older,” said Lieberman.
“What they did in college, what they did professionally, and what they did as Olympians five times. That is unbelievable, and the Hall will be waiting when they are ready to step in.”
Lieberman represented Team USA Women Basketball at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal in the first Women’s Olympic Basketball Team Competition.
