Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson had arguably his best season since entering the league in 2012. Wilson throw for 4110 yards, 31 touchdowns, had a completion rate of 66.1 and career low in interceptions with five. The seven year veteran and Super Bowl winning quarterback was the front runner for the NFL MVP Award in 2019, but Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson would win the honor.
Despite nabbing his first the first All-Pro honor of his career, and being dubbed MVP by Pro Football Focus, Wilson has never received a single vote for MVP his the Seahawks drafted him back in 2012.
Back in May, he made a surprise appearance on the 710 ESPN Seattle’s Tom, Jake and Stacy, shared his reaction to not receiving any vote thus far.
“Come on? No votes at all? What more do I have to do around here, huh?” he said. “I’m just saying, can we get a few votes here or there? Why not?”
Denver Radio Host and former Seahawks training coach, Nick Fergurson made a recent appearance on the ‘What’s Your Opinion Podcast,’ and shared Wilson has been understate since he entered the league.
“He has been underrated since he came into the league. And because wasn’t one of those first round quarterback people tend to look at him as such. I go through this with some many people on the phone or at my [radio] station here in Denver, as far as, what type of quarterback Russell [Wilson] is. When you look at a quarterback, get out of the mind frame of 6’2 224 pounds. Now, we have seen quarterbacks that are either 6’2, 6’1 or may 6’0 feet. When look at a guy like Kyle Murray, he is not a big type of quarterback. You can put him in that same type of realm as Russell Wilson, but it is the the things that he can do because if you look at a quarterback its always can you make those off platform throws,” said Ferguson.
“What I mean by that is, can you make those plays rolling to your right on the move. A lot of quarterback can’t do that they have to be stationary to set their feet. Russell [Wilson] brings a different element to playing the quarterback position where some just don’t get credit for, but this why we have seen the emergence of more African American quarterbacks in the NFL. Because some teams are realizing that old statuesque John Elway, Dan Mario, Jim Kelly quarterback, they don’t fit into today’s game anymore. If you can’t move, manipulate the pocket with your feet, and make accurate throws you can’t play,” Ferguson shared.
“But, all that you see when Russell play is a thing of beauty. The guy has eyes in the back of his head because you see defenders trying to track him down and [they] think he can’t see them and spins right out of it, and is looking down field to make those type of throws. So, at some point I hope soon they give Russell his credit.”
Ferguson is not the only former player that feels Wilson is underrated, Giants great Tiki Barber shared with Heavy’s Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson it was baffling and disrespectf威而鋼 ul that Wilson has never gotten an MVP vote.
“At the end of the day, a team that has a quarterback who interestingly never gotten a MVP vote, but is always in the MVP conversation; I mean, it’s baffling the disrespect that Russell Wilson gets. Maybe the most underrated quarterback in the NFL these days. But a team that has a Russell Wilson – who is always going to find a way to create and make plays happen, has a chance in the NFL.
