Michael Jackson’s former personal bodyguard, Matt Fiddes spoke with The Frankie Lee Podcast.
Provided fascinating insights into how the King of Pop used his brand power to obtain exclusive privileges, including free hotel stays and luxury gifts.
Fiddes mentioned that Jackson’s team strategically negotiated with hotels whenever he visited major cities like London or New York.
“He wouldn’t pay for any hotels, unless he was there in secret,” Fiddes revealed. “If he was publicly staying, he knew the value his brand brought to a hotel.”
Before Jackson’s arrival, the process involved contacting hotels. His team offered publicity in exchange for complimentary accommodations.
“Michael Jackson’s people would say, ‘He wants the presidential suite for the next 10 days, free of charge. He’ll publicize that he’s staying there, fans will know, paparazzi will know, and you’ll get all the publicity. But we’re not paying $10,000 to $15,000 a night.’”
Fiddes verified that hotels consistently accepted these terms, recognizing the significant impact Jackson’s presence had on their brand.
A Life of Exclusive Perks
According to the bodyguard, Jackson’s unparalleled global fame attracted luxury brands eager to endorse him.
“I’d get calls from companies like Mercedes or Ferrari offering their latest models as gifts, just hoping he’d be seen driving them,” Fiddes said.
The deals exceeded cars and included other exclusive items delivered to Jackson’s legendary Neverland Ranch. Fiddes pointed out that Jackson’s lavish spending was not always necessary to enjoy a luxurious lifestyle despite his reputation for it.
“He had this incredible collection of items just because companies wanted the association with his name.”
The Power of a Global Icon
The influence Jackson had as one of the most recognizable figures in history was revealed in Fiddes’ anecdotes. His brand management, as well as his star status, were reflected in his ability to turn his presence into promotional gold. These stories offer a glimpse into how Michael Jackson managed his life as the King of Pop, living a life of opulence and privilege without ever needing to open his wallet.
