Nick Wright on Monday’s episode of First Things First on FS1 discussing the report that Denver Nuggets’ center Nikola Jokic winning the MVP award again for second year in a row.
“The NBA MVP is now one less thing that I need to care about. Once upon a time it mattered. … Back-to-back MVPs used to be reserved for the all time best of the best, + Steven Nash. Two yrs in a row, Jokić’s team is AT HOME when the award’s actually announced,” said Wright.
Former Seattle Sonics coach George Karl saw Wright’s comments and tweeted, “I bet Nick hasn’t been in a hoops gym before.”
Wright would later reply, “I bet I work for a team before you do again, Georgie,” from his personal Twitter account.
Wright is referencing Karl’s horrible reputation around the league. Last year, NBA TV analyst Brendan Haywood shared that he doesn’t like talking bad about North Carolina alums, but Karl rarely gets positive stories told about him.
“Negative! Very negative around the league, George Karl is not someone that… I rarely hear former players that played for George Karl tell positive stories. I don’t think George Karl will ever work in the NBA again because his rep is that bad. That is a Carolina guy too,” said Haywood.
“You know George Karl played at Carolina way back in the day. I don’t like to throw no shade at Carolina dudes, but I never played for George Karl, and he’s never done nothing to me. But, I have had some teammates that played for him, and nobody likes that dude.”
Karl’s former player, Ryan Hollins that he was a cool coach to speak with while he was in Sacramento playing for him. However, he did say he hurts himself with the things he says online.
But, for Karl it bad story after bad story whether it’s DeMarcus Cousin, Ray Allen, Carmelo Anthony, and Kenyon Martin. They all don’t have anything nice to say about their former coach.
Karl will be inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame later this year as a part of the 2022 class in Springfield, Massachusetts.
