Karlie Samuelson, who plays for the Los Angeles Sparks, is well-versed in the tight-knit community that defines the WNBA. Her recent remarks about former Stanford teammate Cameron Brink demonstrate the extent of those connections. Brink, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, was off to a promising rookie season with the Sparks before suffering a torn ACL that kept her off the field forever.

The team and fans were devastated by the injury, but those closest to Brink are confident she will return stronger than ever. Samuelson recently expressed her opinions on their connection and Brink’s determination to recover.
“Yeah, I actually spoke to Cam a little bit when my sister tore her ACL a couple of weeks ago — just to get some advice — and she reached out,” Samuelson said after Lynx’s practice on Friday.

“If Lou needs anything, her length and presence are there. Obviously, there are so many stories like this around the league, but with her coming back, I’m sure she’ll return really strong and hungry to build on the great rookie season she was having before the injury.”

The short but significant exchange between the two Stanford alumnae reflects the league’s personal and professional support networks, particularly regarding navigating injuries.
Samuelson’s younger sibling, Lou, who also plays professionally, is currently recuperating from an ACL tear of her own, and Brink’s outreach not only expressed solidarity but also reflected her character.
With her 6-foot-4 frame, impeccable timing, and basketball intelligence, Brink quickly established herself as a disruptive force on the defensive end for Los Angeles. Her presence was felt not only in blocks and rebounds but also in the team’s overall identity—something Samuelson believes will be key when she returns.
“She’s got that competitive edge, that drive,” Samuelson added. “And after seeing what she was building early in the season, I have no doubt she’ll come back even better.”
The Sparks’ focus remains on the present, with a combination of young talent and veteran leadership keeping them competitive. Still, the team and fans are eagerly anticipating Cameron Brink’s eventual return. The prospect of returning to the hardwood looks promising with friends like Karlie Samuelson by her side.
Brink knows her recovery will take time, but she has unwavering faith in her return. The Sparks may be without her for now, but when she does return later this season or beyond, expect a more seasoned and motivated version of the rising star who was starting.
