Pharrell Williams’ Rock the Vote Campaign Resurfaces Amid New Stance on Celebrity Politics [Watch]
Pharrell Williams’ participation in Rock the Vote campaigns before the 2008 election and his recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter have raised questions about his involvement in political activism.
In the interview, Pharrell was asked if he would permit either political party to use his music in their campaigns, and his response showed a more reserved attitude toward politics.
“I don’t do politics… I get annoyed sometimes when I see celebrities trying to tell you [who to vote for].”
Pharrell’s Rock the Vote efforts before the 2008 election had a different message. In one of his most notable videos from the campaign, he passionately encouraged Americans to get involved by voting.
“You’ve got to go to the polls, you’ve got to get there, you’ve got to make a change. The only way to change things is to actually make that change. Rock the vote, and then sit back and see all of your hard work pay off.”
His encouragement highlighted the importance of participating in the democratic process, as he believes that individual votes can impact outcomes.
In his most recent interview, Pharrell expressed his frustration with celebrities taking on overt political roles. He stressed his preference for avoiding political endorsements, stating,
“When people get out there and get self-righteous… and they are out there walking around with a placard: ‘Shut up!’ So, no, I would rather stay out of the way.”
While Pharrell confirmed his commitment to voting and caring about the country, he preferred taking action instead of publicly aligning with any political movement.
