Lakers’ Jason Kidd Will Be Remembered As A Mav ‘Because He Won A Championship,’ Says Mark Cuban
Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Jason Kidd played 18 years in the NBA. The Dallas Mavericks selected him in second in the 1994 draft. He went on to win co-Rookie of the Year with Grant Hill. Both individuals were the last two to achieve this feat.
Throughout his career, Kidd spent significant time in Dallas on two separate stints; the first one was 1994-1996. In 1996, Kidd was traded to the Phoenix Suns with Tony Dumas and Loren Meyer in exchange for Michael Finley, A. C. Green, and Sam Cassell during the 1996–97 season.
The second stint was 2008-2012 after the Dallas Mavericks and New Jersey Nets agreed on a deal that sent Kidd to the Mavericks along with Allen and Wright for Van Horn (via a sign and trade deal), Harris, Diop, Hassell, Ager, $3 million, and first-round picks in 2008 and 2010, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein.
In 2011, the Dallas Mavericks would go on to win an NBA championship the first one in franchise history. It was also the third appearance for Kidd in an NBA Finals. During his seven years in New Jersey, Kidd made the Finals twice, once against the Los Angeles Lakers in 2002 and again against the San Antonio Spurs in 2003, but came up short.
During a recent interview by One37fm with Dallas Mavericks Chairman Mark Cuban, he was asked if Kidd would be more remembered as a Dallas Mavericks member or now the Brooklyn Nets.
“A Mav because he won a championship. He was drafted by the Mavericks, he won a championship with us, won the Co-Rookie of the year with us, said Cuban.
“So, yeah [I think he will be remembered as a Maverick], and I think he wants to be remembered as a Maverick as well.”
Last season, Cuban was asked if there was a possibility that the team could retire Jason Kidd‘s jersey.
”You know that is a good question! We have to get through Dirk first sometime towards the end of the year. And then everything is on the table, we will see, said Cuban.
Kidd’s son, TJ Kidd caught wind of Cuban’s comments and shared with Heavy’s Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson. That it would be “extremely cool.” If the Mavericks retired his father’s jersey.
“Mark Cuban is one of the best owners in sports. So for him to have an interest in doing it, it’s cool. My dad accomplished a lot in Dallas. Rookie of the Year and an NBA title.”
During his career Kidd was a 10-time all-star, named the all-defensive team nine times, the all-NBA team six teams, and was inducted in the Neismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.
Last season as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers coaching staff, he won an NBA Championship.
