Big Meech Transferred to Community Confinement, Nears Release

Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory, the co-founder of the infamous Black Mafia Family (BMF), has stepped towards freedom by moving from a federal prison to community confinement. Complex verified that Flenory was incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Coleman Low was transferred under the supervision of the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ Miami Residential Reentry Management Office on October 15, 2024. Flenory’s sentence will be completed either in home confinement or at a Residential Reentry Center, commonly known as a halfway house, as a result of this transfer.
Legal documents indicate that Flenory will be released on January 27, 2026. His attorney, Brittany K. Barnett, expressed her joy in a statement to TMZ and emphasized Flenory’s commitment to personal growth during his nearly two decades behind bars.
“Two decades is an incredibly long time, and it’s been inspiring to witness the power of hope and resilience,” Barnett told Complex. “He used his time in prison to focus on personal growth and transformation, and now he has the opportunity to begin a new chapter.”
Barnett also brought the justice system’s broader issues to his attention, stating, “He’s out, but millions more remain trapped inside—there’s still so much work to be done. We need to push for real change, for a justice system that recognizes the dignity and potential for redemption in every individual.”
Her sole focus is advocating for criminal justice reform, with freedom being her ultimate goal.
The public has been fascinated by Flenory’s story for years, both for his criminal empire and his eventual transformation. In 2005, he was arrested and sentenced to prison for drug trafficking and money laundering by his BMF organization.
According to reports, it earned over $270 million from cocaine sales in the United States at its peak.
Barnett’s path to release was accelerated by the removal of 32 months from his sentence in 2023.
Flenory and his brother Terry Lee ‘Southwest Tee’ Flenory co-founded BMF in 1985, presenting it as a creative agency and hip-hop label. Despite its legitimacy, federal agents had suspicions that the brothers were running a drug operation. Their organization would later be linked to one of the most significant drug trafficking operations in U.S. history.
As Big Meech nears his release, many anticipate his next life stage. Due to his focus on personal growth and transformation, his story may now be one of redemption and change.
