Stephen A. Smith and the rest of the First Take panel was at Texas Live in Arlington, Texas on Friday. Ahead of this weekend’s matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants. They did not come alone, Hall of Famer and former Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens and defensive end DeMarcus Ware were both in attendance.

During a segment of Stephen’s A-List and the subject matter was ‘Why the Cowboys won’t win Superbowl.” This part of the show began with Stephen A. Smith selecting Damian Woody and former Cowboy defensive linemen Marcus Spears because they pick Dallas to win the Superbowl.  A feat that hasn’t happen in 24 years and counting. The next pick on the list was the loaded NFC with teams such as the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons, Seattle Seahawks, and Los Angeles Rams. That is going to be a tough conference to make it out of this season.

Stephen A didn’t stop there, and his next selection was Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

“Why this man goes out there spends his money talks about his biological clock is ticking. He is running out of time. So, he says, and he is in panic mode, as a result, the Cowboys will be in panic mode. We all know, even there is no reason to panic, you panic anyway. This is just the latest piece of evidence you’re done,” said Stephen A. Smith.

Some still blame for running Jimmy Johnson at of town in 1994. Jones would later admit that he let his ego get the best of him when deciding to let go of Johnson.

“I lost my tolerance for a lot of things,” Jones told KTCK-AM 1310. “I probably should have had a little more tolerance with Jimmy Johnson. Seriously.”

The Dallas Cowboys owner made some similar comments back in 2014 to ESPN when it came to his relationship with Johnson, “I should have exercised tolerance and patience. I did not.”

Barry Switzer was brought in to replace Johnson in 1994, and lead the Cowboys to the NFC Championship Game and won a Super Bowl in 1995. In 1996, they would win another division title, and a year later Switzer would resign.

Now, back to Stephen’s A-List as he names Jason Garnett as the second reason why the Cowboys won’t win a Superbowl. During this selection, former Cowboy Terrell Owens stated, he should be the number one pick.

“That should be number one,” says Owens. It starts with the head coach.”

The Philadephia Eagles released Owens on March 14, 2006, and four days later the Cowboys came calling. Jerry Jones announced that the Dallas Cowboys had signed Owens to a 3-year deal worth $25 million, and included a $5 million signing bonus. Owens would spend the length of his contract in Dallas making two Pro Bowl appearance in 2007 and 2008.

However, on March 4, 2009, Owens was released from the Cowboys due to a dispute between Cowboys tight end Jason Witten and Owens. According to Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the two nearly came to blows in 2008.

Team sources would later confirm to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen that the altercation happened at the Cowboys’ training facility when Witten tried to speak to Owens about passing routes. Owens was under the impression, that quarterback Tony Romo and Witten, who were close friends and roommate at the time. Held private meetings and created plays without including Owens.

Per The Dallas Morning News, Jerry Jones informed Owens that he would say a Cowboy in 2009. However, that would change when Jones requested Owens to meet at a restaurant.  According to Owens Jones drew a line on the table, and Owens was on one side and the rest of the team was on the other.

I still have no answers. I just had finished a three-year deal. I just had signed a four-year extension. And I go into the offseason and I had a call with Jerry Jones … he called me and asked me, ‘What do we need to do to get to that next level?’ I thought we were talking as owner-to-player, I thought we were having a conversation to see how we can make a big splash [to open Cowboys Stadium]. After that call, I thought I was solid.

Maybe a month or so later, I’m in Miami and he’s there for a meeting in Fort Lauderdale. They call myself and my agent to the hotel, and that’s when he did what he did. He drew a line of the table, put everything Cowboys related on one side, put T.O. on this side and he drew a line and he said we’re parting way.

That’s how I got cut. I don’t have an answer as to why. So when you think why to me, there had to be somebody and someone that ultimately led to my departure. … The sheet that was filed to the league, it said it was production-based, not anything conduct-detrimental, none of that.

They had a number of boxes to check, but they said it was production-based. So I knew that it had to be coaches and some players that were behind the scenes saying, ‘Oh I can’t play with this guy.’ But why? I was being productive, I was trying to do things behind the scenes in an organization where we could progress, because we weren’t doing anything.

Terrell Owen was inducted in Pro Football Hall of Fame as a part of the Class of 2018.
