Memphis Grizzlies guard Scotty Pippen Jr. finds playing alongside Ja Morant an adjustment and has figured out ways to enhance Morant’s aggressive scoring and flashy playmaking. Pippen, a rising talent in the NBA, has used his opportunities to learn from the electrifying guard and create his own space on the court.
“Playing with him, I didn’t know how good a passer he was or how willing of a passer he was, but being able to sit there and watch him play, to see how he makes certain reads and certain passes, I’ve definitely tried to take a lot of that into my own hands,” Pippen shared with RG’s Grant Afseth.
Pippen has benefited from Morant’s vision and willingness to throw the ball, which has improved his court awareness and passing instincts. Morant’s explosive scoring and highlight-reel playmaking often dominate the spotlight.
Pippen has been quietly refining his skills, particularly his ability to simplify the game when sharing the floor with his star teammate. During Morant’s injury-related absence, Pippen has stepped into a more significant leadership role, which is crucial for the Memphis Grizzlies.
“I just try to do whatever it takes,” Pippen said, showing his versatility and commitment to team success. “If it’s scoring, facilitating, or playing defense, I try to impact the game. If those guys are out, I might score more. If they’re back, I focus on defense or being a spark. Whatever I can do to help the team win, that’s what I’m going to do.”
Pippen’s ability to adapt to the team’s demands has been crucial in Morant’s absence due to injury. Pippen has been proficient in starting and maintaining a consistent presence on both sides of the floor as the Grizzlies’ offense adjusts to Morant’s temporary absence.
Pippen’s mindset has made him a significant influence in multiple ways, including pushing the ball in transition and running the offense and defense. Many players face the challenge of balancing starting and coming off the bench, but Pippen has maintained a consistent mindset regardless of his role.
“Sometimes I’m a starter, sometimes I’m coming off the bench or limited minutes,” Pippen explained. “Whatever my role is, just making sure I come in and make an impact.”
Pippen’s mentality has made him a valuable addition to the Grizzlies’ team as they continue to navigate through a season of ups and downs. His contributions are undeniable, regardless of whether he’s facilitating, scoring, or adding energy off the bench.
