The Hype Magazine recently had the opportunity to speak with Malcolm D. Kelley about his upcoming film “Detroit” that will hit theaters everywhere August 4th and what inspires him as an artist. In addition, we asked what can we expect from him as a musician this year. The full interview with Malcolm D. Kelley can be seen below.
As an artist, what inspires you the most?
Just real-life experiences. Experience is the best teacher. So being able to go through ups and downs in my life and being able to make it relatable and melodic and being able to connect with people.
Can you tell us about your character Michael in the action thriller “Detroit” in theaters on August 4th?
My character Michael Clark is a young, cool, and smooth guy who basically lives at the Algiers Motel with his friends. The Algiers Motel is before this incident took place was a place where people would hang out to get away from the rebellions in the city. From him being so strong you will see he has been broken down and his vulnerability is overwhelming. Dealing with the police can be a very scary situation if you don’t know if you’re going to make it home. So that’s pretty much my character and I can’t wait for this movie to come out. So, we can spark a conversation. We have come a long way since this took place 50 years ago but I think how relevant this movie still is to this day we still have a lot of work to do. So also with uplifting the city of Detroit bringing this story to light. Having people like Julie who was at this motel when it happened on set every day to help us get through it but also for her to almost relive this situation I know was hard on her but shows how strong she is and how happy she is for this to be out as well means so much. These are the projects you dream about from an artist stand perspective and fan of timepieces. I’m so glad to be a part of it and work with the amazing cast, Kathryn Bigelow, and the whole Annapurna team.
You are one-half of the Columbia Records group MKTO. What are some of the things that you have in store for music projects this year?
Yeah, we have accomplished so much. Also, first I want to say thank u to the fans who we have grown to love just as much as they love us and appreciate them sticking with us. Working on this next step but trying to get music out asap.
You had the opportunity to work with Eve on her show and Ice-T on Law and Order SVU. Did either of them give you advice as far as, acting or as a musician?
When I did eve and Law & Order SVU I wasn’t as vocal about the music so no advice there. It was a pleasure being able to work with them so just being that age and working with some people I really admire. You learn as much as possible by watching and just working with them. Also, when you work with people like Denzel Washington Kathryn Bigelow and JJ Abrams just to name a few you can’t help but not watch and study what they are doing. I enjoy every second from the conversations to working together has been the best learning experience ever from acting directing producing.
You landed a prominent role on the Lost (TV Series) from 2004 to 2009. What was something that you took away from that experience?
Being one of the only kids on the island and working with all those great actors I was like a sponge being able to soak up so much. It definitely elevated my career. Got to experience Hawaii that’s like my 3rd home a beautiful place.
Who are some of the artists you are currently working with right now & what projects do you currently have out in the market?
While also being an artist and just learning as much as I could from the labels point of view just trying to apply and share knowledge. Having the opportunity to write and Exec. Produce.
What are some ambitions you would like to pursue outside of the entertainment business?
Just investing being an entrepreneur giving back to the community. Just being able to watch my peers and learn from them and apply that to what I want to do. Like Nipsey Hussle opening a smart store and other endeavors evolving our legacies.
How many games did you think it would take the Warriors beat the Cavs this year?
Honestly, I wanted the series to reach 7 games. The better team got it done early because they know they can’t give Cleveland a chance lol. Can’t wait to see what teams will do in the off-season to try to compete next year. I miss Kobe Bryant on the court though if I must add.
Besides Detroit what film are you excited to see this year?
Obviously, “All Eyez on Me” just because of the icon Tupac has become. He has been such an inspiration to me and I want to support the film. I’m sure there are some other films that I haven’t heard of coming up that will be great to see, but Get Out was a dope movie and I really can’t wait for Detroit lol.
What’s next for Malcolm D. Kelley & Americas Most Hated Music Group?
You can expect a lot more content from both parties. Can’t wait to enjoy this summer and what’s to come. Follow socials and stay in the mix. Both parties myself and AMH will be at the BET experience as well.
