Drake Responds After Victoria Monét Calls Him a "Trick"

Victoria Monét and Drake both spent this week in the spotlight thanks to new music, but the moment that got fans talking had nothing to do with a tracklist. During a recent Complex conversation about men who spend money on women, Monét playfully labeled Drake a "professional trick." Rather than letting the remark slide, the rapper showed up in the comments with a thoughtful, lengthy explanation of how he thinks about money, generosity, and what people should expect in return.

A Lighthearted Debate Turns Into a Talking Point

The exchange started during a Complex interview in which Monét and her co-host weighed a question that has fueled countless group chats: where is the line between "tricking" and simply being generous? As the pair discussed men who spend large sums on the women in their lives, Monét pointed to Drake as a "trickster master."

The tone of the segment made it clear the comment was meant as a joke rather than a jab. Monét was not criticizing the rapper so much as using one of music's most famously lavish figures as a punchline in a broader, good-natured conversation. Still, any mention of Drake tends to travel quickly online, and this one eventually reached the man himself.

Drake Takes the Conversation to the Comments

Instead of brushing off the label or firing back with a diss, Drake chose to explain himself. Notably, he never directly disputed being called a trick. He reframed the entire idea, arguing that spending money on people can deliver a meaningful emotional reward without turning into a transaction.

"There's a return on investment in your soul for doing things for people who you feel deserve it," Drake wrote. In his view, generosity is rooted in personal fulfillment, not in an expectation of intimacy. He also referenced his own financial position and described the satisfaction he gets from surprising deserving people with unexpected gifts.

Generosity Versus Expectation

The heart of Drake's response was a distinction many listeners found relatable. Giving freely because it feels good is one thing, he suggested, while spending money with the hope of receiving romance or intimacy in return is something else entirely.

"Transactional exchanges with the expectation of intimacy are a different frequency," he concluded.

Whether or not fans agree with his definition, the reply offered a rare glimpse at how one of the world's biggest stars thinks about wealth. It also turned a throwaway joke into a genuine discussion about intentions, which is arguably what Monét's segment set out to explore in the first place.

Monét Delivers Frequency of Love

The timing could hardly have been better for Monét. On Friday, October 2, she released Frequency of Love, her first full-length studio album since 2023's Grammy-winning Jaguar II. Drake's use of the word "frequency" in his closing line was a fitting, if possibly coincidental, nod to the new project.

Released through Lovett Music/RCA, the 22-track album was executive-produced by Camper and features SZA, Bruno Mars, Bryson Tiller, Lucky Daye, Chlöe and Leon Thomas. Monét's daughter Hazel also makes an appearance. Musically and lyrically, the record widens her lens beyond romantic love, exploring motherhood, personal growth and her hopes for the world around her.

Drake Expands the FOMO Era

Drake has been busy as well. This week he released HABIBTI (FOMO DELUXE), which builds on the music tied to his September 15 YouTube film Fear of Missing Out. The roughly hour-long film introduced fans to a batch of previously unreleased songs, though Drake later signaled that not every track featured would reach streaming platforms.

The deluxe edition reportedly adds four new songs: "Solar Eclipse" featuring Don Toliver, "Quebec," "Classic PT.2" and "Cold Shoulder," which pairs Don Toliver with Yebba.

Two Artists, One Very Busy Week

In a week packed with major releases, it says something that a comment-section reply managed to steal part of the conversation. Monét's joke and Drake's earnest response showed two artists at different points in their careers engaging with each other in good humor. For fans, the bonus is simple: plenty of new music to stream while the debate over generosity—and who qualifies as a trick—rolls on.
