De’Aaron Fox returned to Sacramento on Friday night, representing his first match-up with the Kings since being traded to the San Antonio Spurs earlier this season. The matchup moved Fox and the Kings’ fanbase, as he had been the face of the franchise for more than seven years.
Fox’s Legacy in Sacramento
Sacramento picked Fox in 2017 and quickly became the team’s heart and soul. In 2023, he ended the Kings’ 16-year playoff drought, leading them to their first postseason appearance since 2006. The organization’s firing of head coach Mike Brown earlier this season abruptly ended his time in Sacramento. Fox clarified that he was not willing to play for a different coach in Sacramento, explaining his position in an interview with ESPN.
“I was like, ‘Yo, I’ve been here for going on my eighth year. If Mike gets fired, I’ll be going on my fifth coach. And I told them, ‘I’m not going to play for another coach. I’m going to play for another team.'”
The Kings responded to Fox’s desire for stability and a fresh start by sending him to San Antonio in a blockbuster trade.
Tension Between Fox’s Wife and Malik Monk
Fox’s return was the main storyline, but an unexpected moment caught the attention of Fox’s wife, Recee Fox, who was seen in a heated exchange with Kings guard Malik Monk after the game. The reason for the confrontation was unclear, but it was clear that Recee was dissatisfied with Monk.
Monk and Fox have a rich history, having played at Kentucky before rejoining in Sacramento. Monk stated that Fox was one of the main reasons he signed with the Kings in 2022.
“It was crazy because he was one of the reasons I came here for sure,” Monk admitted.
Monk revealed that he had not spoken to Fox since the trade and had not discussed it with him before, even though they had a close bond. He suggested that they would likely reconnect in the future:
“I’ll probably talk to him later on down the line.”
Moving On
Fox’s return to Sacramento was a heartfelt occasion, not just for the fans but also for those closest to him. Although there may still be feelings about how things ended, it’s clear that De’Aaron Fox left a lasting legacy on the Kings organization. The Kings must adjust to life without their former star, while Monk, once tempted by Fox, faces an uncertain future in Sacramento.
