Before the 2025-26 season started, the Orlando Magic hired former Dallas Mavericks’ assistant coach God Shammgod, according to Shams Charania.

“Dallas Mavericks player development coach God Shammgod has agreed to join the Orlando Magic as an assistant coach, Andy Miller of Klutch Sports tells ESPN. Shammgod has worked for the Mavericks since 2019 and now receives a larger role in Orlando.”

Shammgod would later take to Instagram to deliver a message to the Dallas Mavs organization and their fanbase.

“Today was a bitter sweet day for me I had 9 amazing years 2016-2025 with the Dallas Mavs thought I would be here forever. I want to thank all the coaches and players I got to work with for those year. Want to thank the fans and the people of Dallas for embracing a guy for New York and making me feel at home. Also want to thank Mark Cuban one of the best owner in sports for giving me a chance and believing in me. Most of all I want to thank you for being an even better person. Last but not least I want to thank the WHOLE ORGANIZATION and all the relationships I built in Dallas thank you.

“Now for Orlando Magic thank you for this opportunity to grow in my career and help go to the next level. Coach Mose and all the coaching staff /organization Thank you. FOR BELIEVING IN ME.”

This season, Shammgod gets the chance to work with up-and-coming talent such as Paolo Banchero, Anthony Black, Jase Richardson, Jalen Suggs, Desmand Bane, and Jett Howard, to name a few.

After Orlando’s 138-127 victory versus the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night, Shammgod spoke to LandonBuford.com about working with former Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero, Anthony Black, and Desmond Bane.

“It’s been good working with him, Anthony Black, and Desmond Bane. It’s been good; you just have to keep pushing. They are young and are going to keep getting better and better. All three of them are going to be future stars in the NBA,” Shammgod shared.

He was later asked if any of them had asked about past workouts with Kobe Bryant since he arrived in Orlando.

“AB, he and I talked about that; he also asked about Kai and Luka. We are just trying to get it right and make sure everyone gets healthy. So, we can make this push.”

Last month, Paolo Banchero was asked by SI’s Ryan Kaminski about his skill development after working with God Shammgod. Following Kaminski, observing the two going through their pregame routine at home.

“Just the way I play, always trying to use contact to my advantage. Coach Shamm, he’s been great. Just helping me out with small details of the game.”

Per Kaminski, Banchero is shooting a better efficiency in the restricted area (67%) with over 125+ more shots from layup/dunk range than last season.

Jalen Suggs and Desmond Bane spoke about Paolo’s scoring uptick.

“I think he has been doing a great job setting a tone, whether the points are showing up on the board or playmaking,” Desmond Bane told Orlando Magic Daily earlier this season. “He is doing a hell of a job doing both. He’s playing at an extremely high level. He’s helping us win games.”

While Suggs added, “He’s just such a problem. “Once he’s rolling, you have to start reacting to him, because he is making the right kickouts. We did a great job of shooting today and continuing the energy with quick drives and good ball screens to hockey assists.”
