On the day of her death, Rachel was taking her 11-year-old son to the Dunkin’ on Cheltenham Avenue in the Melrose Shopping Center in Philly when the unthinkable happened. A gunman approached her car and shot her multiple times, leaving her son traumatized and devastated.
“This appears to be a targeted murder of a mother,” Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele said. “Anyone with information about this vehicle or the driver is asked to call police and help us find whoever committed this heinous murder.”
The school district and the community mourned Rachel’s death, and her loss was deeply felt by everyone who knew her. The police launched a criminal investigation into the incident, and the district attorney urged anyone with information about the car or the suspected killer to come forward.
Mastery Charter Schools released a statement about King’s death, saying, “This morning, a teacher from mastery’s Grover Cleveland Elementary was the victim of a fatal shooting in Philadelphia. We send our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones. We are devastated by the loss of an extraordinary teacher, who spent the last 10 years working with our students and their families.”
Rachel’s boyfriend described her as a loving mother who was working towards getting her master’s degree and her principal’s certificate. She was a remarkable person who dedicated her life to education and had a positive impact on countless lives.
