Nicki Minaj uses the opportunity to stand up for mental health in the entertainment industry and give flowers to those who have worked with her throughout her career.
Minaj was honored with the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards. Members of his fan club, primarily known as “Barbz,” presented the award to the ‘Super Bass’ artist. In her speech, however, she took the time to thank the “key individuals” who inspired her. Individuals such as Lil Wayne and Jay-Z. She also took the time to acknowledge the artists and those who gave her “huge opportunities,” like Kanye West, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Madonna, and more.
Then Minaj turned the conversation toward mental health, starting with, “I wish Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson were still here,” said Minaj.
“I wish people understood what they meant and were going through. I wish people took mental health seriously, even for the people who we think have perfect lives. I wish Pop Smoke and Juice WRLD and Nipsey Hussle were here.”
It great to see Minji give flowers to Kanye West and Mariah Carey after taking jabs at them in the past. Earlier this year, Minji called West a clown at Essence Fest in New Orleans.
“A monster, though!” Minaj began. “A monster, though! But we don’t fuck with clowns.”
The comment caused Ye to unfollow Minaj on Instagram, and he is still not following her as of 8/28/2022. However, Minaj is still following him.
As for Mariah Carey, she and Minaj were feuding back when they were part of the panel of American Idol season 12.
There were reports of the two having arguments; they had some issues on screen, and eventually, a video surfaced showing serious problems between the two, which grabbed headlines.
According to People, “Mariah has been saying little things to jab at Nicki from day one of shooting. Mariah doesn’t think Nicki can sing and doesn’t think she should be judging folks. Nicki has been taking all of the jabs, but on this particular day she lost it.”
Minaj would later tell her side of the story, “I don’t know. It was just two big old divas, I guess. I was just like sitting there, and I guess before I went in there I heard all the stuff that was being said, but I didn’t believe it. I heard them saying ‘Mariah doesn’t want you on the panel’ but I was like, ‘No. I am friends with Mariah.’ I was like arguing people down. Like, ‘Don’t believe everything you read, you’re crazy.’ And so I went there and I started to feel a bit of the shade.”
When Carey was interviewed, she said the beef was fake and created by the producers of Idol.
