Earlier this month, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won their second Super Bowl 31 -9 and the first team in NFL history to win one on their home field. Quarterback Tom Brady grabbed all the headlines as he won his seventh Super Bowl in ten appearances.
However, the Buccaneers won the game on the defensive side of the ball, which has not been seen since the Seattle Seahawks could achieve that feat in Super Bowl XLVIII 43-8.
A member of that Seahawks defensive unit was a recent guest on The Leisure Time Podcast. The host of The Leisure Time Podcast, Ivan McLennan, asked KJ Wright to give his thoughts on that Bucs defensive and Tom Brady winning another Super Bowl.
“That defensive is the real deal. They weren’t quite as good as we were, but they were real. The two linebackers of Lavonte David and Devin White I have been watching them all season,” said Wright.
“They have been consciously balling, and with the edge rusher Jason Pierre-Paul and Shaquil Barrett coming off the edge. I think they would make Kansas City look that average. I said, okay, Kansas City may score 17, but Kansas City did not even score a touchdown all field goals. So, that was super impressive”.
Wright’s former teammate Michael Bennett shared recently that he thought “The Legion of Boom” was a top three defense all-time.
“”I think our defense will be in the top three. Our defense was one of those defenses that we hit on all the three things you need to be remembered in football. I think swag was one, and I think people will not forget that we were one of those teams that had that swag that you cannot deny, and they were about their business,” said Bennett.
“Secondly, statistically, we were the best when we start looking at what we did as a team and how we accomplished what we did. Third, we won a championship. Many good teams do not make it to the Super Bowl, and they cannot do it year after year after year. As far as statistics, so I think we will be at the top when you look at the swag and our personalities. I think people will try to imitate it, but won’t be able to match it.”
As for Brady, “He beat me in a Super Bowl, I was like, I hope Brady doesn’t win, but when he went to the Bucs, I was like I can’t even be mad at him if he wins again. That shows how dominant this dude is and what he brings to the table. A lot of people say his success was because of Bill Belichick and all that talk. This dude is the real deal. So, for him to go to a new team during Covid and win a Super Bowl solidifies his greatness.”
Tom Brady and the New England Patriots beat the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX 28-24.
