The Minnesota Timberwolves were able to land the number one pick for the 2020 NBA draft earlier this month. That pick can be used to add a player such as LaMelo Ball, Anthony Edwards, and James Wiseman, to name a few. On many mock-draft, boards have Edwards going number one to the Timberwolves.
Another option is to trade the pick as a part of a package for an established player. According to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic, Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations, Gersson Rosas is open to trading the pick, if it helped the team get better.
“We have an open mind as we go through all of this. We want to do what’s best for this organization. And it means being thorough, being diligent and looking at every option. Draft, trade, free agency, whatever the case may be.”
One of Minnesota’s options is to package the pick in a couple of the players for Devin Booker. Something that D’Angelo Russell and Karl Anthony Towns would like to see.
Last season, Booker, Russell, and Towns were the cover athletes for SLAM November/December 2019 Issue, and three athletes expressed their desire to play with each other on the same team.
“We gotta do this again, when we’re all on the same team,” Russell jokes toward the end of the day. “Nah, don’t cut it,” he says to our rolling cameras. “Y’all got it on footage. When we’re all on the same team—I ain’t gonna tell you which team because I don’t know—we’re gonna do this again.”
ESPN NBA Analyst Jay Williams thinks that the Timberwolves could trade the pick and players for Booker.
Williams was a guest on Heavy with Scoop B and was asked his thoughts on Karl Anthony Towns if he sees him as a part of the Timberwolves’ future, and what they will do in the upcoming draft.
” I think a lot depends on ownership; I have been hearing rumors that their team is going to be up for sale potentially. I think Karl Anthony Towns is a franchise player; he is one of the most special individuals that I have ever seen. I love him. I’ll always be objective when it comes to his game. I think for Karl being with D’Angelo Russell, I like the duo; the fact they got the number one pick in the draft, I felt happy for them. It really depends on who they are surrounding Karl with, and I think that is a big question, man,” said Williams.
“You can love a city more than anything, but if you don’t have someone in the front that surrounds you with [the] talent to win. After a while, you are going to start looking at them like what am I doing? What am I doing here? Do I believe in management to help get to where I want to go, and if that’s not the case, the franchise also does what’s best for the franchise. I don’t look down on players who have to do what’s best for the player. If Karl gets into that situation, he is going to have to make that decision, and I’ll stand behind him regardless.”
Do they trade for Devin Booker?
‘I don’t see why you don’t. If you have the number one pick, whatever assets you want with the exception of maybe D Lo [D’Angelo Russell] and Kat? Here, and I have to be real with you I love D Lo too, but if you have to have D Lo in it? ,” said Williams. “I don’t know, for D Book? D Book is different, and I would love to see D LO, D Book, and KAT together, but I’m willing to let go of the house, and future picks to get Devin Booker.”
Booker and the Phoenix Suns went 8-0 in the NBA bubble, but fell short of reaching the play in game after the Blazers and Grizzlies took care of business.
