The North Carolina Tar Heels in the early 1980s became household names after defeating the Georgetown Hoyas in the NCAA’s National Championship game in New Orleans at the Superdome in 1982.
Michael Jordan, who was a freshman at North Carolina won the game for the Tar Heels as he hit the go-ahead basket with 15 seconds remaining in the contest. The game would end 63-62 giving the Tar Heels the championship.
It is one of the most memorable games in NCAA History.
After the game, the post-game celebration was equally memorable according to former Tar Heel Sam Perkins.
Perkins was a guest on the Scoop B & Reg Podcast, and he revealed that members of the 1982 championship team were asked to sign a woman’s butt.
“We were in New Orleans after we won the National Championship in college, Perkins told Reginald Calixte and ScoopB.
“The first thing I saw coming out of the hotel, I guess this woman found out we won the championship and it is safe to say she just wanted me to sign her ass.”
Hold up that is crazy, but Perkins was not finished: “Believe it or not, there were already signatures on her ass. So it was my teammate Jimmy Black; because I know what his signature looks like. James Worthy had signed it. Because I guess I was late coming to meet them to go to the French Quarter and she had three other signatures already.”
Michael Jordan and the rest of his Tar Heel teammates were a select group of individuals and thrived in the NBA. After leaving UNC following his junior year, Michael Jordan went on to change the culture in the NBA and Basketball in the 1990s. Jordan along with Scottie Pippen, Horace Grant, Dennis Rodman, and head coach, Phil Jackson helped lead the Chicago Bulls to Six NBA Championships in ten seasons.
James Worthy was also a member of that UNC team, and he went on to win three NBA Championships with the Los Angles Lakers along with Magic Johnson, Byron Scott, Kareem Abdul-Jabar and head coach Pat Riley. Worthy would also be named the 1987-1988 Finals MVP.
As for Perkins, he was drafted 4th in the 1984 draft by the Dallas Mavericks. He would go on to play 17 seasons in the NBA with Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Lakers, and the Seattle SuperSonics. Perkins had the opportunity to make three finals appearances with Lakers, Sonics and the Pacers.
