Earlier this week we were saddened by the news that longtime NBA and NFL owner Paul Allen had lost his fight with cancer at the age of 65. Allen along with his childhood friend Bill Gates founded the Redmond, Washington based company Microsoft in April of 1975. Microsoft is a multinational technology company that sells computer software, consumer electronics, and personal computers. Allen would leave the company he helped found in 1983, due to his original battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Five years later he would purchase the Portland Trail Blazers from California real estate developer Larry Weinberg for $70 million. Allen was instrumental in the development and funding of the Moda Center (Formerly known as the Rose Garden) named after the city of roses.  In 1996, Allen stepped in a purchased his hometown Seattle Seahawks, as the franchise from Ken Behring, who threatened to move the Seahawks to Southern California.

The Seattle Seahawks would beat the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII and capture Seattle’s first ever ‘Vince Lombardi.”

Allen’s childhood friend Bill Gates had this to say about his friend’s passing:

“When I think about Paul, I remember a passionate man who held his family and friends dear. I also remember a brilliant technologist and philanthropist who wanted to accomplish great things and did,” said Gates.

Paul deserved more time in life. He would have made the most of it. I will miss him tremendously.

Before the start of the Dallas Mavericks and Minnesota Timberwolves game, Maverick owner Mark Cuban shared his thoughts on the passing of fellow NBA owner Paul Allen.

“He was a legend! When I first came into the league, he told me what to expect from David Stern and how to deal with it. He was relentless and what he believed in for the NBA and didn’t take any prisoners. He always tried to do the right thing. Obviously, he was a legend in the tech world I grew up in the PC business, and I started selling PCs 1983, and Microsoft products when he was part of the company. It’s just heartbreaking because there is so much to him and what he brought to the world that I don’t think people recognized, but the people who know him do and appreciate it,” Cuban told me.
