Dallas Maverick’s Dirk Nowitzki held his third annual Tennis Classic at the Southern Methodist University Tennis Complex. Admission cost for this event was $20, and free for children 3 and under.
To start off the event, a press conference was held at approximately 9:45 am on the sidelines of the Tennis Court. Along with Dirk, there was a strong line of professional Tennis players there such as Andy Roddick, 2003 U.S. Open champion; Tommy Haas, German ATP Tour player; Mark Knowles, three-time Olympic medalist and former world No. 1 in doubles.
Dirk also brought along some of his fellow NBA representatives with him; Dwight Powell, Devin Harris, and former Maverick Monta Ellis.
“So Monta, I’ve never seen play, but he claims he was an all-American in high school or something,” Nowitzki jokingly said at the press conference. “And Dwight, already told me last year that he could play,”. [ 0:03 (video recording)]
Monta Ellis was asked to give a little of his tennis history.
“Well, I played tennis in middle school through high school, until I graduated my senior year. So, I’m pretty familiar with the game,” said Ellis.
Dirk’s teammate, Dwight Powell, gave a few words expressing his gratitude towards Dirk giving back to the community.
“It’s very motivating, I think for all of us, I think in the Dallas Community, athletes or not, to get involved and help. He’s left such a tremendous footprint in a positive way in the city and in this state,” said Powell. “So, any time that he calls any of us, you can ask any of our teammates that have played, if he calls them to come out, they’ll be there because they know how big of a deal it is here in Dallas and in Texas to be involved in one of his events.” [ 0:38 (recording)]
All proceeds from this Tennis Match were donated to the Dirk Nowitzki Foundation. The foundation offers education, health, and well-being for children. [http://dnfoundation.org/
