Black Panther Director Ryan Coogler Reveals Last Time He Spoke With Chadwick Boseman Before Passing

In the first episode of Wakanda Forever, the official podcast of the Marvel Black Panthers, host Ta-Nehisi Coates had a chat with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler tells how the Marvel film went from potential screenplay to global success.

Coogler is back to conduct the next sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and spoke at length about the impact of Chadwick Boseman’s death on the film and its mourning story.

In a touching interview, Coogler said that Boseman was the steward of the franchise and in their last conversation, before her death, Boseman still had Marvel in mind.

The Academy Award-nominated actor was 43 years old when he died from a secret battle with cancer. Like T’Challa in Black Panther, Boseman was celebrated for being a black hero on a large screen, what the children said they were desperate to see more. Describing the impact of Boseman on the success of Black Panther, David Fear of Rolling Stone said: “Coogler gives us a singular, spectacular vision of an Afro-futurist nation unto itself; Boseman gives us a human being and a royal hero worthy of leading it.”

In the interview, released on Thursday, Coogler said that his last conversation with Boseman was only a few weeks prior to his death, and a few days after finishing the first script for the second Black Panther movie.

“He said he didn’t wanna read it because he didn’t wanna get in the way of what direction the studio might have, ” Coogler said. “So he was like it’s better for him to read it later. I found out later that he was too tired to read anything. “
