The WNBA has seen record-breaking numbers this season. In April, during the draft, there was a 123 percent increase, according to Heavy’s Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson.

Per Robinson, the 2020 WNBA Draft amassed 6.5 million video views and 1.3 million minutes watched.

Robinson sat down with WNBA Insider and CEO of Girls Talk Sports TV,  Khristina Williams. Girls Talk Sports TV, a digital sports media platform that features interviews, sports news, and league updates. The discussed a variety of different WNBA topics including this year’s draft.

“The Draft happened on April 17th, and due to the coronavirus pandemic, they had to adjust and have it virtually. And ESPN ended up moving it from ESPN2 to ESPN the main channel and we saw those ratings go up 123 percent compared to last year’s draft so, for the FIRST ever virtual draft, I think it was done really well considering the time we had to set it up, and I think that it was really well done,” said Williams. “We got to see a little bit of player’s back stories, we got to see them a little bit at home, their families and they also honored Kobe and Gianna [Gigi] Bryant and the other victims from the helicopter crash that perished. I think that the league REALLY did it well.”

Williams has reported numerous stories this season most notably, her story on the WNBA filed a trademark for ‘wubble,’ which would pave the way for the league to release new merchandise and a documentary.

On Tuesday afternoon, Williams was a guest on ONE37pm with Jael Rucker the two discussed why she started her platform. She also shared some advice for young women looking to break into the industry by taking a non-traditional path.

“The way that things are happening are changing. Just put out the work. It doesn’t have to be all together, it doesn’t have to be perfect. When I started Girls Talk Sports TV, it wasn’t perfect at all,” revealed Williams. “It still isn’t, every day I’m learning, but for me it was about taking that first step on faith.”

She would also reveal some of the challenges that she faced early on in her career.

“Well, as a woman— an African-American woman coming into the sports world, you’re gonna have strikes against you. I learned in this business, it’s all about building relationships. People connect with a person before they connect with a brand. I consider myself a person that connects with people, and that’s what has helped me grow and get into those big rooms,” said Williams.

“Now just a few short years later, Girls Talk Sports TV has reached over 12,000 followers on Instagram, and in addition to being one of the leading voices of WNBA coverage, Khristina has created a new digital series titled Kickin it with Khristina. The show has featured superstar names such as Tasha Cloud and Sue Bird.”
