Virginia Cavaliers: Mavericks Head Coach Rick Carlisle Will Watch Game Vs Purdue

With a  53-49  victory over the Oregon Ducks, The Cavaliers of Virginia break their All-Time winning season record with their 32nd victory in the Sweet Sixteen. Next, up for the Cavaliers are the Boilermakers of Purdue in the Elite Eight with the opportunity to go to the Final Four. Entering Saturday night’s showdown, the Boilermakers are 26-9, after sending the Tennessee Volunteers home in the Sweet Sixteen.  The game between both schools was one of the most intense games of this year’s tournament.  Purdue would go on to win the game by five in overtime despite having a double-digit lead in the second half.

Someone, who will be keeping a close eye on tonight’s game is Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle. Carlisle alumnus of the University of Virginia. Carlisle co-captained the Cavaliers to a Final Four appearance back in 1984, while averaging 12.5 points and 3.3 rebounds per game during his college career. Before he attended the University of Virginia, he played two seasons at the University of Maine from 1979 to 1981 and then decided to transfer. 

“I will be tuning in tonight at 7:49 p.m.,” Coach Carlisle told me after Mavericks practice this morning.

After he graduated college, Carlisle was taken was drafted by the Boston Celtics with the 70th pick, in the 1984 draft. Where he played alongside Larry Legend and won a championship in 1986 under head coach K. C. Jones. During his time with the Celtics, Carlisle averaged 2.2 points, 1.0 assists and 0.8 rebounds per game. In his reserve role with the team.

The Boilermakers and Cavaliers game will be aired on TBS at 8:49 p.m. Eastern tonight.
